The Cincinnati Bar Foundation is an independent, non-profit and charitable [IRS 501c3] organization. Gifts to the Foundation are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law.
“Our members who donate to the Cincinnati Bar Foundation are the stars of the legal community,” said John Holschuh Jr., president of the Cincinnati Bar Foundation, as the Foundation’s annual 50/50 fundraiser begins this month.
“Last year approximately one in four members of the CBA contributed to the 50/50 Campaign. Because of that, we were able to distribute $211,850 in grants that directly impacted over 32,000 people in our community,” Holschuh said. “This year, we invite everyone to take a starring role. Our goal is to have 100% of the CBA membership participate in the campaign,” said Holschuh. To that end, the Foundation is asking each and every member of the CBA to support the campaign with a minimum gift of $50.
“We had an award-winning year of support in 2008, with more than $106,000 contributed by CBA membership,” Holschuh said. “This year, we need to increase that and strive to get all of our members to participate. Your minimum gift of $50 is a small contribution, given the tremendous results we have been able to achieve in the community. Again, perhaps equally important, is the reflection this has on our profession.”
Contributions to the 50/50 Campaign assist the Foundation’s efforts to enhance the image of the legal profession and promote justice in the Greater Cincinnati community. Seed money and grants by the Foundation are made twice a year and are concentrated in education and training programs to help lawyers improve themselves and their careers; legal education, assistance programs and justice initiatives for our community; and improving the image of the legal profession.
“The Foundation helped a huge number of people and organizations in our community last year,” said Kent Wellington, the Foundation’s grant committee chair. These included:
Initiatives to help at-risk children through:
• CALL Truancy Mediation Program
• Children’s Defense Fund – Child Well-Being Initiative
• Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center- Cincinnati Child Health Law Partnership
• ProKids- Expanding the Committed Community & Steps to Peace
• Survive & Thrive
Initiatives help families through:
• Family Nurturing Center of Northern Kentucky – HOPE Project & Facilitated Visitation Services
The Foundation supported efforts to help curb violence with:
• Cincinnati Works – Cincinnati Initiative to Reduce Violence
• Community Police Partnering Center – CeaseFire Cincinnati
• University Hospital – “Out of the Crossfire”
Furthering the public’s knowledge of the law through:
• Northern Kentucky University Research Foundation W. Frank Steely Library — Creative Thinking: Intellectual Property for Teens and Young Adults
• Summer Work Experience in Law
“In addition to our community efforts, every year the members of the Cincinnati Bar Association count on the Foundation to fund popular programs that support lawyers,” said Wellington. These include:
It is important for our profession and the community that we continue to play a starring role and support the Cincinnati Bar Foundation,” concluded Holschuh. “Please join with all the other members of the association and pledge your support.”
How to Help
You can help the Foundation support these important programs with a gift to the 50/50 Campaign. Donors will be listed in a special program at the CBA Annual Meeting Luncheon. Look for the campaign envelopes in the November CBA Report or make your donation now online by clicking here or by mailing a check, payable to the Cincinnati Bar Foundation, to The Cincinnati Bar Foundation, 225 East Sixth Street, 2nd Floor, Cincinnati, OH 45202.
Be an Advocate
Again this year, a most-generous contribution of $250 of more will place donors in the Foundation’s Annual Advocate circle. Annual Advocates, whose actions speak loudly and powerfully about the legal profession’s commitment to the community, will be counted as partners in the 50/50 Campaign, as well as listed on the CBF’s donor wall.
“It is important for our profession and the community that we continue to play a starring role and support the Bar Foundation,” said Holschuh. “Please join with all the other members of the Association and renew your contributions or join the other members of the Association who have already pledged their support.”
