P&G Legal Division announces new scholarship in honor of Judge Nathaniel R. Jones
The Procter & Gamble Legal Division announced it will help create the Judge Nathaniel R. Jones Memorial Scholarship to support a Black law student in Southwest Ohio with an annual scholarship endowment. By helping lower the financial obstacle to a law degree, P&G hopes to increase access to the valu- able skills, wealth building, stability, and community engagement that come with legal practice.
“We are honored and excited to help create this scholarship to honor the legacy of Judge Jones,” said Joe Stegbauer, senior vice president and general counsel. “Judge Jones was a giant in the legal community and in the civil rights movement, and his legacy of service and commitment to justice and equality is an example for all lawyers.”
P&G has committed $75,000 to the scholarship fund, which will begin being awarded for the next academic year. The schol- arship will be awarded annually to a Black law student at the University of Cincinnati or Northern Kentucky University who has demonstrated a strong commitment to academic excellence and community service. Along with P&G, the Black Lawyers Association of Cincinnati (BLAC) will help select the award recipient.
“This is an incredible way to honor Judge Jones’s legacy,” said Remington Jackson, president of the BLAC. “We are grateful to P&G for their leadership and partnership in making real concrete steps to help break down the financial barrier that black students disproportionately face when entering the legal field.”

Judge Nathaniel Jones served as general counsel for the NAACP where he fought to end segregation and advance civil rights. He was appointed as a federal judge for the Sixth Circuit in 1979 by President Jimmy Carter. Upon his retirement, he worked as an attorney for the Cincinnati firm of Blank Rome. Judge Jones was awarded the NAACP’s Spingarn Medal in 2016, its highest honor.
“I am so pleased that P&G is helping to create this scholarship in my father’s name,” said Stephanie Jones. “Throughout his life, he was a dedicated mentor to minority law students, sharing his time and wisdom, guiding them around obstacles, and helping them pave a path to success. The Judge Nathaniel R. Jones Memo- rial Scholarship is a wonderful way to honor my father’s legacy by continuing his mission of encouraging law students to ‘answer the call.’”
The scholarship will be administered through the Cincinnati Bar Foundation. Donations to the scholarship fund can be made at https://www.cincybar.org/donate or by contacting Lisa McPherson at lmcpherson@cincybar.org.
