Phillip J. Schworer
1955 – 2023
Phillip J. Schworer passed away on Sunday May 14, 2023. He battled an illness that resurfaced several months after he retired from Frost Brown Todd (FBT) in August 2021. Although Phil left us far too soon, he made an admirable and indelible mark on those who had the
good fortune to know him. Phil’s legal and community leadership achievements, on both sides of the river, are numerous: President of the Cincinnati Bar Association; President of the Leadership Cincinnati and Leadership Northern Kentucky Alumni Asso- ciations; founding partner of FBT’s Florence, Kentucky office; leader of FBT’s internal United Way Campaign for many years; Chair of the Northern Kentucky United Way Campaign; Chair of the Redwood Foundation; and various leadership roles with the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce as well as the Cincin- nati Arts Association.
Last, but certainly not least, Phil won the Cincinnati Arts Association’s Annual Dancing for the Stars competition in 2009. Phil enjoyed dancing. Why? It was the perfect way to spend quality time with his wife, Lynn.
Despite the above legal and community accolades, Phil’s favorite titles were husband, father, and grandpa. He married his high school sweetheart. On more than one occasion Phil would
remind you that he definitely married “up.” Lynn and Phil raised three sons (Andy, Alex, and Adam) and took immense pleasure doting over their three granddaughters (Hannah, Suzannah, and Giannah). When the conversation focused on family, Phil would smile and share humorous and loving stories about the entire Schworer clan.
Yet, it was not easy to divert Phil’s attention away from envi- ronmental law. As Phil once explained, “It’s a great day when I’m walking through a manufacturing plant, climbing a ladder to personally observe plant emissions, or hiking through a field to inspect a wastewater discharge pipe.” Clients respected and admired his legal acumen. One client praised Phil because he took the time to place her company “in a comfort zone with intelli- gence and personality which makes dealing with difficult laws and regulations easier.”
Soon after his retirement, when asked to look back on his legal career, Phil simply wanted to have made a difference for his family, friends, and the community. He did. We mourn his passing and applaud a life well lived. Phil will be missed.
